It Takes Two is a colorful puzzle adventure video game wherein you journey to save a couple’s failing relationship. Developed by Hazelight, this is a co-op action-adventure platformer—similar to Degrees of Separation and Unravel Two—that focus on combining the narrative with the gameplay. Take note that this is a co-op-only title offering both local and online play. However, you only have to purchase one copy of the game and just invite your Player 2 via the Friend’s Pass. 

You play better together

In It Takes Two, you play as Cody and May—a struggling married couple who are about to divorce due to their constant clashing. However, because of a wish made by their daughter, they end up becoming miniature dolls who must now overcome several trials to save their relationship and return to their bodies. You and your friend must work together to traverse obstacles, defeat enemies, and solve puzzles to progress through the story.

The premise of this game is highly similar to its developer’s previous games, A Way Out and Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. Both the plot and the game mechanics hinge on player teamwork, which is why you can only play the game with two people. What’s interesting about the co-op play here is that Cody and May will each get new abilities that are meant only for them. Plus, each new area will swap out their previous ability.

The different abilities you get will definitely require you to figure out how to combine them to clear each fantastical section you enter. The vibrant environments are nothing to scoff at here—especially when you’ve been shrunken as dolls. Plus, instead of hidden collectibles, you get to explore the interactive world for minigames. However, in terms of a challenge, this game doesn’t actually have a difficulty setting. Some sections also feel longer than others.

A heartwarming adventure

All in all, It Takes Two is a highly-engaging game that you and your partner can take a stab at and enjoy wholeheartedly. From its familiar narrative to its interesting co-op gameplay, it has much to offer for both beginners and veterans of the game genres it tackles. It can be disappointing with the lack of a difficulty setting, though, and not all sections are paced the same—a sacrifice lost to the story it slowly unravels.
