Work together to save a relationship
It Takes Two is a colorful puzzle adventure game wherein you journey to save a couple’s failing relationship. Developed by Hazelight, this is a co-op action-adventure platformer similar to Degrees of Separation and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons—that focus on combining the narrative with the gameplay.
It Takes Two demands two players working together, either locally or online. Each chapter introduces fresh mechanics tailored for two-player synergy, exploring unique ways to cooperate and help one another, adding to the co-op dynamic while keeping the story going and the gameplay fresh for the duo involved.
You play better together
In It Takes Two, you play as Cody and May—a struggling married couple who are about to divorce due to their constant clashing. However, because of a wish made by their daughter, they end up becoming miniature dolls who must now overcome several trials to save their relationship and return to their bodies. You and your friend must work together to traverse obstacles, defeat enemies, and solve puzzles to progress through the story.
The premise of this game is highly similar to its developer’s previous games, A Way Out and Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. Both the plot and the game mechanics hinge on player teamwork, which is why you can only play the game with two people. What’s interesting about the co-op play here is that Cody and May will each get new abilities that are meant only for them.
Heartfelt premise with an emotional impact
It Takes Two casts players as a married couple, Cody and May, transformed into dolls by their daughter’s tears after hearing about their planned divorce. This “forced cooperation to save a relationship” premise provides a charming framing for cooperative gameplay, and many of the emotional beats, comedic moments, and conflict resolutions draw nicely on real-life relationship struggles. However, some players noted that the premise lacks more emotional depth.
Because of its tightly woven co-op mechanics and level-based structure, this co-op game is most enjoyable when you dive in with a friend, someone willing to cooperate, communicate, and flow with the game’s shifting demands. While this game received fixed updates, no new gameplay content or DLC was introduced. Moreover, replay value isn’t its strongest suit as there’s limited incentive to replay unless you want to swap roles or aim for 100% completion.
A cooperative journey of love and laughter
It Takes Two delivers a uniquely charming co-op experience that blends inventive gameplay with a heartfelt story about teamwork and relationships. The dynamic puzzles, role-specific abilities, and constant need for collaboration make it highly engaging for two players. While the emotional depth could be stronger and replay value is limited, the game’s creativity, humor, and cooperative focus make it a standout title for friends or couples seeking a shared adventure.
